Hi, I'm Stephanie Woodward with Disability Details talking to you about Disability Rights, access, and life. Today is April 20th, 2020. It's important for me to recognize the date because in the time of coronavirus things are changing quickly so if you're watching this after today's date please double check this information to make sure that it's still applicable to you. Today we're talking about the urgent need for SSI and SSD recipients who have eligible children to file with the IRS in order to receive the additional $500 per child with your automatic $1,200 economic impact payment.
Today on April 20, 2020 the IRS and the US Treasury have announced that SSI and SSD beneficiaries who have eligible children have until April 22nd, 2020 at noon to file online with the IRS any eligible children that they have to receive the additional $500 per child with their automatic $1,200 economic impact payment. That means you have less than two days to get online at irs.gov to let the IRS know if you are an SSI or SSDI recipient that does not file taxes and you have children that would be eligible for that additional $500 per child - you have less than two days to inform the IRS of that.
How do you do that? You go to irs.gov then you use the tool called "non-filers: enter payment info here." Again this is for SSI and SSD recipients who do not file taxes and have not filed taxes in 2018 or 2019 but do have children that would be eligible for the additional $500 per child for the economic impact payments. If you do not file your children with the IRS by April 22nd, 2020 at noon Eastern, then according to the IRS you will still receive your $1200 economic impact payment but you will not receive the additional $500 per child. However, all is not lost. The IRS website and the US Treasury website both lists a press release that states any filers that do not list their children by April 22nd, 2020 at noon Eastern would have the additional $500 per child paid in association with a return filing for tax year 2020.
Many of us are struggling right now and those of you who have eligible children have those children right now. So I urge you to go to irs.gov and use the tool "enter payment info" here to ensure that your children are listed and you receive the additional $500 per child along with your $1,200 for your economic impact payment. Please share this information with your family and friends so that everybody can file their children before April 22nd at noon Eastern.
